LONNIE SCHLIEN – TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY
Feb. 9th through Mar. 5th 2017 Opening Reception Feb. 11th, 6 – 8 pm Gallery Talk & Potluck Feb. 18th, 6 – 8pm
The 27 piece collection of framed digital photographs on archival paper span almost three decades, from 1988 to 2015. The breadth of their subjects are equally broad, including images taken during his visits to locations such as Libya, Laos, St. Petersburg, and Vietnam, to name a few. Since preserving newspaper clippings as a kid and studying political science at Brooklyn College in 1968, Lonnie has had a passion for photography. Believing a photograph can be a vessel of documenting reality, he uses public space as a tool to distill life into a photograph, focusing on people as the subject and culture as the story. His color portraits and landscapes describe his worldly travels, transmitting his photojournalist neutral-eye through decisive moments of clicking his shutter button. This show was prepared in partnership with students of the SUNY New Paltz, Fall 2016 Museum Studies class taught by the Dorsky Museum’s Curator of Exhibitions and Programs, Daniel Belasco.
